Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to Jerusalem to present him in the Temple according to the Law. As they offered two turtle doves or two pigeons to God, the devout and just Simeon blessed the parents and prophesied: The child is destined to be a sign, which people will reject; and you too shall be pierced to the heart. Many in Israel will rise and fall because of him, and the secrets of many will be laid bare. (Luke2.35) Anna, an elderly prophetess, who came at that moment, gave thanks to God and spoke of the child Jesus to anyone who was looking for the liberation of Jerusalem. (Luke 2.38)
When Jesus was twelve, he was again taken to Jerusalem in the Spring for the Passover feast. As the family began to return home, Jesus remained in the city, although his parents did not know it. When they could not find him among their family and friends, they returned to look for him and found him teaching the elders in the Temple. The doctors of the Law were amazed at his intelligence and the answers he gave. When his parents wished to know why they had not been told by him about his absence, Jesus replied: Did you not know that I was bound to be in my Father's house? (Luke 2.49) Jesus returned with his parents and family to Nazareth continuing to be under their authority. Mary treasured these things in her heart. Jesus grew to maturity and advanced in wisdom and grace before God and all people. (Luke 2.51-52) The Western Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day.
