Sacraments for Youth
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is part of it.”
~1 Corinthians 12:27
Children prepare to receive the Eucharist for the first time through an organized program at a Bishop John Carroll Cathedral School, through the Religious Education (RE) program or through the Sacraments for Older Youth program. Typically, children are prepared during the 2nd grade school year (ages 7-8) to receive the Eucharist in April or May.
Reconciliation (Confession) is an important part of preparing to receive the Eucharist. First Reconciliation is celebrated during Lent with a communal rite, followed by making a banner to commemorate receiving Eucharist for the first time.
In the Archdiocese Oklahoma City young people participate in a two-year process of self-evaluation, spiritual formation, productive reflection, and preparation for perpetual growth in their life and faith. The Archdiocese suggests that students enter Confirmation around age 14 and during their first year of high school.
During the two-year program, young people explore their gifts, learn about their community of faith, and deepen their understanding of God and His Church. The classes meet on Wednesday evenings from September through April. In addition to classes, there is at least one retreat and several service projects per year to enrich the faith formation of the candidates.
Each candidate chooses a sponsor to be part of his or her faith journey. A sponsor must be over the age of 18, confirmed in the Catholic faith, and a participating member of a parish. Duties of a sponsor include: attending Mass with the candidate, retreats and meetings, remembering the candidate often in prayer. Canon law prohibits parents from being sponsors or godparents to their own children.
Sessions begin each year in September. We follow a two-year process that includes class discussion, field trips, service hours, and retreats. Our parish celebrates the Rite of Confirmation on Pentecost (most years).
